Will Facebook's Account Verification System Discourage Impostors?

When Victor Diaz Zapanta was featured on Mashable for his Facebook account's creative timeline design, he was excited. But that sweet feeling soon soured slightly when the 29-year-old designer's account was parodied by impostors claiming to be him.

It happened at least four times, and at one point Facebook even suspended his profile, forcing the Washington, D.C., resident to verify his account way before Facebook introduced its new page and profile verification on Wednesday.

"I've been playing whack-a-mole with reporting fake profiles on Facebook every couple months," he says. "I'm guessing people were into the Facebook timeline I made and just don't think it's a big deal to impersonate someone." Read more...

To commemorate a true innovator, a California company wants to get a statue of Nikola Telsa erected in Silicon Valley.

Tesla discovered various innovations in sectors including electromagnetics, electricity and earthquake machinery. In honor of Tesla, Silicon Valley company Northern Imagination is trying to raise $123,000 on Kickstarter to make the statue a reality.

The proposed statue would be built in Palo Alto, Calif., home to many tech companies, startups and near Stanford University. The statue rendering depicts Tesla holding a lightbulb, demonstrating a wireless electricity concept.

Interview

Posted: 31 May 2013 06:09 PM PDT

Did it go well? I don't know. I was interviewed by the head of the organization. He asked some questions I wasn't prepared for and a few that I wasn't. I inserted the little speech about why I wanted to leave my current position later in the interview, since he asked, "why do you want to come here?" instead of "why do you want to leave there?" He talked a lot! I let him max his talking, not interrupting or inserting myself, though that was hard! For the first 10 (?) minutes he explained the interview process and talked about the organization. They're interviewing six to eight (six confirmed, two more in the works) people and will go to the second round with about four. He kept talking about the second round as though I was already there ("you'll be talking to the board and the staff..." etc.)--but I know that's sort of the way people talk in interviews--as though getting the job or getting to the next round isn't conditional on how you do in the interview. I don't really understand that. But maybe they've already decided I'm going to the next round just on the strength of my application materials? The crazy thing is that they want to announce who will fill the position at their big annual event, which is less than four weeks from now. I wouldn't actually have to start in four weeks. Then they'd immediately launch into a major internal reorganization. Not ideal, but better to be part of it than otherwise. I don't know how they're going to make such a big decision so quickly, but I guess everyone works on deadlines or they don't get anything done at all.

I wonder if the speed works in my favor. I do know the incumbent, so he can vouch for me (but will he?), but I am lacking in organizational leadership experience. On a tight deadline, maybe you'd want to bring in someone who had been in a similar role before? Then again, given the plan to completely change the internal structure, maybe they'd prefer someone with less fixed ideas about how things should be managed--someone who you could raise up as you saw fit. I know I can learn all the things that I don't already know about how to do this job. Can they see that? Do they want to take a chance that my strengths will outweigh my (minor) weaknesses?

It does seem that they want someone coming from a research orientation who would move more into policy. The incumbent is a policy guy who has moved into research. I'm their person if they want the research depth. I can learn the rest.

I was asked about my experience supervising staff, so thank goodness I had an answer for that. I was NOT asked about the fundraising stuff, but I did volunteer that I'd be excellent at grant writing, and received a nod and smile of approval. I also wasn't asked for any references. Curious.

Gee whiz, I hope I get to the next round! In the meantime, since I failed to ask him questions and that's bad, I need some follow-up ones to put in the thank you email. Suggestions?

Grateful for: a chance.

Facial-Recognition App Can Help Identify Missing Children

A new app aims to make finding missing children in the most populated country in the world a little bit easier and more of a collective effort.

Advertising agency JWT China and missing children site Baby Back Home have jointly developed an app in China that utilizes facial-recognition technology to help identify missing or kidnapped kids, Creativity Online reported. The organizations say that, with a population reaching approximately 1.4 billion, everyone can be a search volunteer.

Users of the app can take a photo of a child they think is lost on their phone. The app then uses facial-recognition technology to identify matches with a missing persons database. If a match is found, the family is notified. Within one week of the app's launch, there were 20,000 downloads and two children were reunited with their families, according to JWT. Read more...

Turn Your Facebook Timeline Into an Actual Book With Likebooks

These days, your Facebook Timeline can serve as a digital scrapbook of your life: birthdays, graduations, weddings, trips to Disneyland and, yes, the time you got a puppy. A new service wants to help Facebook users move those memories from the cloud into a permanent, physical keepsake.

Likebooks will convert content from your Facebook Timeline and print it in a physical book, as shown in the video above. Your status updates, photos and comments from friends can be printed in your custom book. Content is either pulled from a specific date range or an entire year (as far back as 2007)

Depending on how much content you choose to archive, a Likebook can cost from $12 to $137 and can range from 25 to 500 pages. They even come in soft or hardcover. Read more...

Top 5 iOS Travel Apps for Your Summer Vacation

Between pricey flights, hotels and foreign shopping sprees, travel may be one of the best indicators of consumer confidence. And with unemployment going down, and even real estate seeing a modest comeback, that confidence seems to be rising.

Last summer, one in five Americans said they planned on taking a vacation, according to a survey by the market research firm Harris Interactive. And almost half of them, 42%, said they planned on taking two or more trips. This year, the numbers are even higher. Now nearly one in four say they're planning on packing their bags, according to a survey conducted by TD Ameritrade. 'Tis the season. Read more...

Always on and constantly vigilant for those moments when the exceptional invades everyday life, dash cams are pretty awesome. Sometimes they catch 10-ton meteors crashing into Earth. Sometimes they catch heartwarming, inspiring moments of human kindness

And sometimes they catch...well, this. The video above shows a driver cruising down the highway, pumping some jams, when, suddenly, a big brown bear crosses the car's path

The car hits the ursine ambulator head-on with a thunderous crunch, sending the bear toppling head-over-paws off to the side of the road. But all's well that ends well, apparently — the bear doesn't seem to miss a beat, immediately getting up and continuing on its way like nothing happened. No word, however, on how the car fared Read more...

Pregnancy App Glow Uses Big Data to Help Couples Conceive

Posted: 30 May 2013 06:14 PM PDT

A new pregnancy app from a PayPal cofounder aims to use big data and machine learning to help couples get pregnant.

Max Levchin demoed Glow this week onstage at the annual All Things Digital conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.

Glow, which tracks and forecasts fertility, according to Levchin, hasn't launched publicly yet.

"It's a big data or machine-learning-driven approach, where we look at our accuracy as the consumers ... users of the app enter their information, we adjust our weights on the formula," Levchin told AllThingsD's Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg.

Women input details about their menstrual cycle and other personal data (e.g., emotional discomfort, basal body temperature) and the app can provide a fertility window. The app's calendar can show the likelihood of pregnancy on specific days. To share in the process, women can invite their partners to connect with them on the app. Read more...

If you've ever wondered why you can unlock your car by pressing a button, but still have to fumble for your metal keys to get in your house, then the August Smart Lock might be for you.

The $199 device, which will go on sale later this year, lets you secure your door over the Internet. Using August you can bar unwanted visitors and give access to friends and relatives — even for a short period. The base station attaches to your door and attaches to your deadbolt. The company claims the deadbolt adapters and faceplates accommodate 90% of locks on the market. There's also no wiring to worry about — the device uses standard batteries. Read more...
