Blondie To Release New Album Exclusively Through Amazon

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 06:56 PM PDT

Blondie will release their new album, Panic of Girls, on September 13 with Amazon as the exclusive digital and physical retailer. The album is the ninth studio album from the New York City band, and its first since The Curse of Blondie was released in 2004.

Singer Deborah Harry and guitarist Chris Stein founded Blondie in 1974. It became one of the most commercially successful bands to emerge from the New York punk and new wave scenes. The band has sold over 40 million records worldwide and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.

Blondie isn't the first major act to partner exclusively with a large retailer for a wide-scale release. Jay-Z and Kanye West recently gave Best Buy the exclusive rights to sell the CD version of Watch the Throne for the first two weeks it was available. The album won't be in stores and will be absent from iTunes. Blondie's Amazon partnership ensures that people will have to order Panic of Girls online.

Check out the video above for the album's first single, "Mother."

Apple Loses Yet Another iPhone Prototype at a Bar [REPORT]

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 05:50 PM PDT

Has another Apple employee lost another iPhone prototype at yet another bar? It seems to be the case, according to a new report.

Sometime in July, an Apple employee lost an iPhone prototype at the Cava22 bar in the Mission district of San Francisco, according to CNET. As one would expect, Apple immediately contacted the San Francisco Police in an attempt to secure the device.

The report continues, stating that Apple actually traced the device to a home in San Francisco's Bernal Heights neighborhood. The police searched the home, where a man in his twenties was living. He admitted to being at the bar that night but denied knowledge of the phone. The police didn't find anything, so Apple offered the man money for the phone with no questions asked. The man continued to deny any knowledge of the phone.

CNET has more, though. The device was apparently sold for $200 on Craigslist not long after it was lost. That's a far cry from the $5,000 Gizmodo paid to get its hands on the iPhone 4 prototype.

If the story is true, nobody is talking about it. Apple, Craigslist and the San Francisco Police are not commenting. The owner of Cava22 says that somebody called about a missing phone several times, but hasn't been contacted directly by Apple or the San Francisco Police.

Last year Gizmodo rocked the tech world when it leaked the details surrounding the iPhone 4. The device was lost by Apple engineer Robert Powell in a bar in Redwood City, California. It was soon found by Brian Hogan, who then sold it to Gizmodo for $5,000. Apple took the case to court, which led to a raid on Gizmodo editor Jason Chen's home.

It's unclear whether the lost iPhone prototype was for the upcoming iPhone 5, a device expected to debut next month and hit store shelves in October.

Top 10 Twitter Trends This Month [CHART]

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 05:00 PM PDT

Twitter Chart Image

A few recurring Twitter trends tussled for dominance in August, and if you've been following our weekly chart, you likely won't be surprised by this month's aggregate.

Soccer was strong week after week, and ultimately came out on top in August thanks to a variety of highly anticipated matches from around the world. This global trend has consistently been hard to beat.

It was anybody's guess where Justin Bieber would land, but a few antics and appearances late in the month got his fans fired up. The Biebs hits number two in August.

And the British riots from early in the month had enough staying power to come in at number three on our chart.

See the full list below. Note that hashtag games and memes have been omitted from the data. You can check Twitter trends from the past in our Top Twitter Topics section.

Top Twitter Trends, August 2011:

Rank
Topic
Intensity
Description
#1
Soccer/Football
3
Topping the monthly rankings by an easy margin, football captured the most chatter this month, likely due to the start of the English Premier League season in August. However, the top two topics were a bit different, with one celebrating the founding in 1914 of Brazilian team Palmeiras, and the other the move of star player Cesc Fábregas to FC Barcelona.
#2
Justin Bieber
3
Singer Justin Bieber pretended to be "Derek Bieber," fans waited (impatiently) for a Christmas album, and Bieber gave his friend Ryan Butler a haircut in the "Bieber Barber Shop."
#3
British Riots
3
In the violence and chaos of the riots that gripped England, the three most powerful trends were #prayforlondon, #riotcleanup and #OperationCupOfTea.
#4
Super Junior
3
Korean pop group Super Junior returned to the stage with new song "Mr. Simple," winning a number of award shows, including Inkigayo.
#5
Hurricane Irene
3
Hurricane Irene blazed a path up the U.S. East Cost, doing less damage than was feared in some spots (New York) and far more than expected in others (Vermont). At last check, more than 40 deaths are attributed to the storm.
#6
One Direction
2
British/Irish boyband One Direction released its debut single "What Makes You Beautiful." Related trends included various requests for band members to disrobe.
#7
Jersey Shore (TV Show)
2
Jersey Shore returned to the air and was notable for many things, but mostly that clothing manufacturer Abercrombie and Fitch made an offer to the cast not to wear its clothing.
#8
Jonas Brothers
2
Fans wished the Jonas Brothers a variety of happy greetings, birthday and otherwise, but there are apparently still lingering rivalries between fans of Taylor Swift and her ex, Joe Jonas.
#9
Lil Wayne
2
Rapper Lil Wayne released his new album Tha Carter IV. While initially a number of fans tweeted their excitement, it was not long before some started trends such as #ThingsBetterThanTheCarterIV.
#10
Chris Brown
2
Chris Brown released his new mixtape titled "Boy in Detention," but his trending is mainly the result of a halo effect from Justin Bieber rapping on the song "Ladies Love Me."

The rate is now $72.00 for all sales, previously the rate was $53.90 for the basic/low cost credit pack. 90% of members purchase the cheaper/basic pack, so essentially you will now be getting more money for you sales. Gone are the tiered payouts for the more costly credit packs that users did not purchase. This should mean more money for you and more opportunities to scale this great offer."

In Europe it appears that most dating sites track their aff performance on a  country by country basis.mate1 affiliate payouts

This is much more complicated than what's is required by affiliate marketers in the US.

What can learn from affiliate marketing payouts is what price dating sites are paying to acquire members.

But how realistic are aff payouts in regards to overall customer acquisition costs? If a company is paying out 4.03 per member, how close is that to their overall CAC?  And to that end, how do aff marketing leads perform over the long term compared to cpm cpc and other customer acquisition costs?

These are the kind of spreadsheets that the industry holds close to the vest.

Interestingly enough, there is a new push underway to customize advertising even further. By categorizing which ad pitch is most effective ( define call to action ) people can be placed into very specific categories.

How Travelers Use In-Flight Wi-Fi [INFOGRAPHIC]

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 04:08 PM PDT

With the rise of in-flight Wi-Fi, today's jetsetters no longer have to forgo Internet connectivity at 35,000 feet.

How are we using this modern convenience? Researchers at Gogo — the in-flight Wi-Fi provider for American, Delta, United, Virgin and other airlines — sought to find out. Gogo analyzed its network data and has shared its findings with Mashable in infographic form.

The infographic, an extension of an earlier study that found that 80% of mobile travelers who connected to Gogo Internet did so via an iOS device in July, takes a colorful look at travelers' mobile and social preferences. The data represents a combination of internal network analysis and customer surveys.

Especially of note: 67% of in-air Wi-Fi users are mixing business with pleasure — just 6% of travelers are taking an all-work-and-no-play approach to flying. Specifically, Facebook's social network ruled the air from January to June of 2011, accounting for 61% of social network traffic. Twitter, by comparison, logged 22% of all social networking activity during the same period, LinkedIn attracted 10% of social traffic and Foursquare eked out 6%.

For the 79% of travelers who use a tablet in-flight and also still tote around a laptop, we feel your pain.

Find Home Design Inspiration With Houzz’s 170,000+ Photo Library

Posted: 30 Aug 2011 07:43 PM PDT

The Spark of Genius Series highlights a unique feature of startups and is made possible by Microsoft BizSpark. If you would like to have your startup considered for inclusion, please see the details here.

Name: Houzz

Quick Pitch: Users browse its library of 170,000 photos to make ideabooks of home design possibilities.

Genius Idea: Using content that professionals upload themselves.

Clipping photos from magazines seems like an antiquated brainstorming method for covering blank walls or redoing a bedroom.

Houzz is bringing the process into the digital age by creating a database of more than 170,000 home design photos sorted by room, style and geographic location. Users can add photos to their own virtual "ideabooks" or look through curated volumes for inspiration.

Houzz combines browsing magazines with researching designers. Eager designers can show off their work by creating profiles on the site. Users can then contact professionals with questions or job offers.

About 25,000 interior designers, architects and general contractors have used the site to display their work.

"We're sort of the middle man," Head of Business Development Katherine Nannizzi says. "We're giving the tools to the home design professionals to upload their portfolios, and hopefully giving the tools to users to be able to search through this database of photos, find what they're looking for, and connect with the professionals if they so choose."

The site started as the pet project of husband-and-wife team Alon Cohen and Adi Tatarko. As the startup raised a $2 million round of funding last fall, it launched an iPad app and began working to monetize its photo service.

Because each photo on Houzz is, as Nannizzi puts it, "tagged 10 ways to Sunday," it's easy to figure out what type of products individual users are interested in purchasing. This makes it a great platform for advertisers — a revenue stream the startup has recently started pursuing.

Houzz has also started tagging individual items in photos with descriptions and a link to where they can be purchased. Right now, the links don't bring in revenue, but it's conceivable Houzz could one day collect referral fees.

Charging designers is another potential source of revenue, although Nannizzi says the plan is to keep the site's current services free. This makes sense, as designer content is largely what distinguishes Houzz from other online home design tools.

"We don't have a lot of competitors who are working directly with designers," Nannizzi says. "Technology is really disrupting a lot of word of mouth industries because it is allowing them to have a bigger platform, and this is definitely one area where you see that."
